Moyle councillor’s home heating oil warning

MOYLE District councillor Noreen McAllister has called on residents to be vigilant about where they purchase their home heating oil.

Cllr Mc Allister said: “This is a very serious warning particularly in rural areas like the Glens, where most people are completely dependent on oil for heating their home and I am issuing this call following the rise in oil theft and people selling drums of oil door to door in the area.

“I would like to once again take this opportunity to call on the DSD Minister Nelson Mc Causland and his department to overturn this ridiculous policy of not allowing dual heating systems in Housing Executive homes.

“On one hand we have government agency warning people of the dangers of using contaminated home heating oil and yet the very same organisation refuses to allow people to use the open fire in their home as an alternative form of heating.

“This is a ridiculous position and is something I have been seeking to change.

“We hear all too often of stories of people living in fuel poverty and sympathetic tones from government departments, but what we need to see is urgent action on this matter. I will write to the Minister again to ask him to overturn his decision.”
