THE Ulster Unionist Party's Carol Black has spoken of her delight at retaining for her party the Banbridge Council seat left vacant by the resignation of Tyrone Howe.
Ms Black saw off the challenge of the DUP's Paul Stewart in the Dromore by-election, finishing with a total of 1,571 votes compared to the 1,505 of Mr Stewart.
Mr Stewart had polled more first preference votes but was eventually overtaken thanks to transfers from the third unionist candidate, Keith Harbinson of Traditional Unionist Voice.
Ms Black hailed the victory as "wonderful news for the Ulster Unionist Party" and thanked the voters in the Dromore district, as well as her election agent Bill Bingham and her team of campaign workers.
First preference votes were as follows: Paul Stewart (DUP) 1,069, Carol Black (UUP) 912, Keith Harbinson (TUV) 739, David Griffin (Alliance) 357, Paul Gribben (Sinn Fein) 350, John Drake (SDLP) 290 and Helen Corry (Green Party) 59.
The quota for election was set at 1,889 following a disappointing low turnout of 39.15 per cent.
A total turnout of 3,793 out of a total eligible electorate 9,688 was reported as counting began at the town's bowling pavilion on Thursday morning.
