THE LITTLE ONES ARE SET TO BE 2008'S BIG THINGS
TIPPED to be one of the big breakthrough acts of 2008, Californian indie group The Little Ones, have, rather appropriately given the band's name, given a taste of what we can expect when they release their first full-length album, Morning Tide, in April, with their mini or 'little' debut album of just seven tracks, Sing Song.
Full of tambourines and handclaps, it's not surprising that the indie four-piece have garnered comparisons to 1960s groups like the Beach Boys, The Zombies and The Kinks, together with modern-day favourites like The Shins and Glasgow act, Belle and Sebastian.
Kicking off with the dreamy Let Them Ring The Bells, this album may only play for 28 minutes, but every second is pure quality. Driven by an overall positive, quirky feel, first single Lovers Who Uncover enthralls the listener with its infectiously catchy beats.
And the infectious guitar-led pop continues with Cha Cha Cha and Oh MJ and despite the less exuburent tone of Face the Facts, it is one of the album's most successful tracks which just gets better and better with each listen.
And although the band have been in existence for only two years, there is a high level of sophistication present in the band's song-writing – which many more established bands would kill for.
Having gained a following as they played on smaller stages throughout the UK and Ireland festival circuit last year, Sing Song signals the band's sure-fire future success, cemented by the group's latest excellent single, The Ordinary Song.
This is also clearly a band which relishes the challenge of creating music for people to dance to. Take the lyrics in Oh MJ – "We are moving forward towards your own betterment/ Fire your attention away from jaws to your feet/ Where we'll make 'em, make 'em move forward."
Not always an easy task for a band which is still finding its feet, but somehow The Little Ones have managed to capture the easy-breazy, laid-back vibe of the west-coast, without the naffness which has engulfed some of their contemporaries.
January is traditionally the time when music executives push hard for new bands to be heard on the radio, while the more established bands and acts take off to the sun somewhere to recuperate from the excesses of the rock 'n' roll lifestyle.
Already those who are being touted as the 'next big thing' of 2008 are British indie-rockers One Night Only, electro-indie act Friendly Fires and hot-on-the-heels of Amy Winehouse is Adele and Welsh songstress, Duffy – and The Little Ones is another to add to the list.
So when festival season rolls around once again, this is one US band which is sure to be playing bigger crowds, who will singing along to every word.
