KATE'S ALBUM PROVES SHE IS NO ONE HIT WONDER
DROMORE High School fifth year pupil Lana Hood, enjoying a week's work experience with the Leader, reviews Kate Nash's first album 'Made of Bricks'.
SOMETIMES mistaken for Lily Allen, Kate Nash's first album, Made of Bricks, was brought onto the summer market, which rarely happens, because of the huge demand for more of this music newcomer.
It may not be to everyone's taste, especially it would seem the over 25s, but no-one can deny that her first single 'Foundations' hit the music scene harder and faster than most.
She supposedly first started writing songs when she fell down the stairs and broke her foot and was waiting for it to heal, as can be heard in the song 'Stitching Leggins', where it is put in her typical Londoner style.
After 'Foundations' came out, she had been labelled a "one-hit-wonder" but then went on to prove critics wrong by bringing out another popular single, 'Mouthwash'.
Her quirky lyrics are sure to grab the attention of many people, as she appears very 'down to earth' and is definitely someone to be noticed.
For such a young age, she has created an album with surprising variety for having such a strict trademark theme. A particularly good song is 'Mariella', which starts off slow and heavy, but after about a minute of listening completely changes into a light enjoyable tune, with lyrics that can sound quite random, but give a message about being who you want to be and not who others want you to be, for example 'she got some Prittstick and she glued her lips togevva'.
Also, some of the titles of the songs are explicit, which will no doubt get attention from younger fans, although when listened to they come across as a rushed effort to bulk up the album.
However, about two songs such as 'Skeleton-Song' and 'Birds' bring the album down slightly, being not quite as catchy and too self conscious to make much of an effect on listeners.
Nash is constantly being compared to Lily Allen, and admittedly has a noticeable similarity, which perhaps begun when their names were linked through Myspace in 2006, but it is the opinion of most of her fans that her lyrics are much wittier and hold a lot more meaning than Allen's.
She has been praised endlessly for interjecting sarcasm and slight acidic lyrics into what appear to be cheerful songs, which is more than can be said for her rival. It is obvious to anyone that listens to Made of Bricks, that she exists in her own right.
The majority of the songs on this album are more impressive within the first few seconds than some other recent newcomers' entire albums could hope to be, and although Nash hit the music scene within the blink of an eye, it would seem she won't be leaving that way...
