Ballynahinch home for province’s first film school

BALLYNAHINCH has become home to Northern Ireland’s first Film School.
With the Northern Ireland Film School at the South Eastern Regional College’s Ballynahinch campus, school-leavers will now have access to higher education training and those already in the industry will have the chance to attend masterclasses delivered by experts.
Co-ordinator, Campbell Miller, said, “We identified that there was a real gap in the market as even lecturers at SERC had to attend training in England. The NI Film School at SERC caters both for those who are starting out in the industry as well as those who are already employed and need professional development.”
The NI Film School at SERC will focus on Broadcast Journalism and Professional Filmmaking and the first full-time course is well underway. The HNC in Creative Media Production is a two-year programme with an immersive learning approach.
Campbell added, “Throughout the course there will be opportunities to make connections with industry professionals, work on location in Northern Ireland and throughout Europe. Ultimately students will gain a qualification but, just as importantly, will develop the practical skills that employers are looking for.”
The HNC will involve producing news stories, documentaries and professional films first-hand. Students will learn about sound design, camera techniques, interview and presentation techniques, research for media production and project management. It is a three-day-a-week course which will prepare participants for employment as well as provide a pathway into a degree.
