RBL women set for celebrations
DROMORE’S small but active Royal British Legion Women’s Section will this year mark the 65th anniversary of its formation.
Meanwhile, despite a membership of fewer than 20, the section continues to clock up success.
Only last month it picked up its latest honour, when the standard-bearer led a contingent of members to the Northern Ireland District Conference at Carrickfergus’s Clarion Hotel.
There, the delighted Dromore group received a cup and certificate for the Section’s efforts in recent competitions open to all branches in Northern Ireland.
A spokesperson said, “This was a great achievement, the branch being so small, with only 15 members, as opposed to branches with much larger membership, halls and clubs.”
The Dromore Women’s Section, she said, relied heavily on the general public for support in all its fundraising efforts.
It was never disappointed, she stressed, by the public response, so great was the generosity it encountered.
On a separate note, members welcomed news of a planned memorial to the late Mrs. Helen McFadden MBE, herself a one-time member.
Heln, they said, had been a gracious host during the Women’ Section’s monthly meetings in her Princes Street premises.
“It is good to see,” the spokesperson added, “that a memorial to Helen will be forthcoming, as a fitting tribute in recognition of her work in the community.”
Meanwhile, planning ahead for its anniversary on November 25, the local Women’s Section is hoping its many friends will join members in marking the occasion.
