AT Banbridge District Council’s annual meeting on Friday 15 June 2012, DUP councillor Junior McCrum was elected to serve as Chairman for the coming year and will be supported in the role of Vice-Chairman by UUP councillor Elizabeth Ingram.

Junior, who has served as Chair and Vice-Chair on several committees since he became a councillor in 2005, was overjoyed at his appointment, saying: “I am delighted to be serving as Council Chairman for the ensuing year. Without question Councillor Baird will be a hard act to follow given her vast experience and long service. However, I promise to perform the duties of the role with the same dedication and enthusiasm as my predecessor. This year is certain to be a busy one but I am looking forward to representing the Council at the many engagements that lie ahead. I know Councillor Ingram and I will work well together for the benefit of the district.”

Councillor David Herron proposed and Councillor Jim McElroy seconded the new Chairman’s appointment. Councillor Glenn Barr proposed and Councillor John Hanna seconded the new Vice-Chairman’s appointment.

The outgoing Chairman Councillor Joan Baird expressed her gratitude to her colleagues and she also thanked the Chief Executive and Council officers for their sterling work throughout her term in office.

Other business conducted at the meeting included the appointment of the Council’s standing committees for Leisure and Development, Environmental Services, Public Services Liaison and Policy and Resources in accordance with the Council’s policy on proportional representation. The councillors elected to sit on each committee are as follows.

Leisure and Development Committee members include Glenn Barr (UUP), Carol Black (UUP), Ian Burns (UUP), Seamus Doyle (SDLP), Paul Gribben (SF), Marie Hamilton (SDLP), John Hanna (UUP), David Herron (DUP), Elizabeth Ingram (UUP), Junior McCrum (DUP), Jim McElroy (DUP) and Paul Rankin (DUP).

Environmental Services Committee members include Joan Baird (UUP), Carol Black (UUP), Ian Burns (UUP), Brendan Curran (SF), Hazel Gamble (DUP), Paul Gribben (SF), Marie Hamilton (SDLP), David Herron (DUP), Elizabeth Ingram (UUP), Junior McCrum (DUP), Sheila McQuaid (ALL) and Olive Mercer (UUP).

Policy and Resources Committee members include Joan Baird (UUP), Glenn Barr (UUP), Seamus Doyle (SDLP), Hazel Gamble (DUP), John Hanna (UUP), Olive Mercer (UUP), Junior McCrum (DUP), Jim McElroy (DUP), Sheila McQuaid (ALL), Olive Mercer (UUP) and Paul Rankin (DUP).
